The National Strategy of India for Artificial Intelligence #AIForAll was reported by NITI Aayog in June 2018. India’s efforts to develop its own AI strategy and its aspirations to have a significant impact on artificial intelligence have drawn the attention of Michael Dell, chairman and CEO of Dell Technologies. The billionaire CEO, who leads one of the world’s largest IT companies and a leading PC vendor, believes that India’s strong economy, availability of tech talent, and push to lead in AI make it an attractive market for Dell and many other companies.
During the Dell Technologies World event in Las Vegas, Michael Dell expressed that India has the talent and resources that are valuable for Dell and other companies. He also highlighted India’s desire for sovereign AI. New Delhi has positioned itself on the global stage as a leader in artificial intelligence, aiming not only to compete with AI models created by big tech companies but also to develop its own AI ecosystem. However, achieving this goal will require building AI computer infrastructure from the ground up, nurturing AI talent, and creating and deploying indigenous large language models. This endeavor may involve significant costs, but the recent approval of a national-level India Artificial Intelligence mission with a budget of Rs 10,371.92 crore by the Union Cabinet has opened doors for building AI computing infrastructure and enhancing the local AI ecosystem through public and private partnerships.
India has joined countries like Saudi Arabia, the UK, France, Germany, and the United Arab Emirates in the global race to shape the future of AI technology. Interest in AI has surged since the release of ChatGPT, a large-language model developed by the Microsoft-backed startup OpenAI, in November 2022. With stiff competition from Silicon Valley giants and a rise in AI nationalism, Indian startups are now developing their own AI models.
At the Vegas event, Dell announced significant progress in the adoption of artificial intelligence across various sectors and highlighted the benefits of the technology for enterprises. They introduced an AI factory aimed at accelerating the integration of AI into enterprises in collaboration with Nvidia. As described by Dell and Nvidia, an AI Factory is an intelligent bundling of the components necessary to deploy AI solutions quickly and easily.
“We are transitioning from computation to cognition in the era of AI. It took years before we wired buildings for electricity, and the primary goal of building machines that plug into the wall was to automate tasks. That’s where we are with AI right now,” Dell said, speaking to a packed hall of partners.
