Biodegradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, the products of the incomplete combustion of fossil fuels, are ubiquitous in nature. Some of these chemicals are of environmental concern because of their genotoxic and carcinogenic potential and their persistence in the environment. [1] Control of biodegradation of biocompatable magnesium alloys By utilising its rapid corrosion reaction and controlling its degradation process through Zn and Mn alloying, purification and anodization, chemically active magnesium can be developed into a biodegradable biocompatible implant … Continue reading “Latest Research on Biodegradation : March – 2020”

Virulence factors of Candida albicans Candidiasis may be a common infection of the skin, mouth and esophagus, alimentary canal , vagina and system of humans. Although most infections occur in patients who are immunocompromised or debilitated in another way, the organism most frequently liable for disease, Candida albicans , expresses several virulence factors that contribute to pathogenesis. These factors include host recognition biomolecules (adhesins), morphogenesis (the reversible transition between unicellular yeast cells and filamentous, growth forms), secreted aspartyl proteases and … Continue reading “Latest News on Candida Albicans Research: Jan – 2020”

Fatal enterovirus 71 encephalomyelitis During an epidemic of hand-foot-mouth disease caused by enterovirus 71 (EV-71) in 1997, 4 children presented with sudden cardiopulmonary collapse and minimal neurologic features. All children received CPR but died within a couple of hours of admission. Postmortem studies showed infection by EV-71 with extensive damage to the medulla and pons. We postulate an etiologic link between EV-71 and brainstem encephalomyelitis because the explanation for pulmonary edema and death. Treatment of Murine Colitis by Lactococcus lactis Secreting Interleukin-10 The cytokine interleukin-10 (IL-10) has shown promise in clinical trials for treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Using two mouse models, we show that the therapeutic dose of IL-10 are often reduced by localized delivery of a bacterium genetically engineered to secrete the cytokine. Intragastric administration of IL-10–secretingLactococcus lactis caused a 50% reduction in colitis in mice treated with dextran sulfate sodium and prevented the onset of colitis in IL-10−/− mice. … Continue reading “News Update on Lactococcus lactis Research: Jan – 2020”

Host adapted serotypes of Salmonella enterica Salmonella constitutes a genus of zoonotic bacteria of worldwide economic and health importance. the present view of salmonella taxonomy assigns the members of this genus to 2 species: S. enterica and S. bongori. S. enterica itself is split into six subspecies, enterica, salamae, arizonae, diarizonae, indica, and houtenae, also referred to as subspecies I, II, IIIa, IIIb, IV, and VI, respectively [1]. Members of Salmonella enterica subspecies enterica are mainly related to warm-blooded vertebrates … Continue reading “Latest Research News on Salmonella Enterica: Jan – 2020”

HIV Infection and Dementia One of the characteristics of end-stage HIV infection is dementia, the precise causes of which remain elusive. during a Perspective, Gartner debates the evidence for the hypothesis that the trigger for the initiation of HIV-associated dementia is that the activation of monocytes within the bone marrow and their transmigration into the brain. Ochratoxin A production by strains of Aspergillus niger var. niger. In a survey of the occurrence of ochratoxin A (OA)-positive strains isolated from feedstuffs, two of the 19 isolates of Aspergillus niger var. niger that were studied produced OA in 2% yeast extract-15% sucrose broth and in corn cultures. this is often the primary report of production of OA by this species. High diversity in DNA of soil bacteria. Soil bacterium DNA was isolated by minor modifications of previously described methods. After purification on hydroxyapatite and precipitation with cetylpyridinium bromide, the DNA was sheared during a French press to offer fragments with a mean molecular mass of 420,000 daltons. After repeated hydroxyapatite purification and precipitation with cetylpyridinium bromide, high-pressure liquid chromatography analysis showed the presence of two.1% RNA or less, whereas 5-methylcytosine made up 2.9% of the entire deoxycytidine content. No other … Continue reading “Latest Research News on Soil Bacteria: Dec – 2019”

Toxigenic Fusarium species. Identity and mycotoxicology. This book represents an effort to clarify the taxonomy and nomenclature of toxinogenic Fusarium spp. The nomenclature used follows the system given in Nelson, P.E. et al. Fusarium species: an illustrated manual for identification. University Park, USA; Pennsylvania State University Press, 1983, 203 pp. Each toxinogenic sp. is discussed in reference to its incidence and distribution, association with human and/or animal diseases, toxicity to experimental animals, and mycotoxins produced. this is often followed by … Continue reading “Latest Research News on Fusarium Species: Dec – 2019”
