The effects of β-glucan on human immune and cancer cells Non-prescriptional use of medicinal herbs among cancer patients is common around the world. The alleged anti-cancer effects of most herbal extracts are mainly based on studies derived from in vitro or in vivo animal experiments. The current information suggests that these herbal extracts exert their biological effect either through cytotoxic or immunomodulatory mechanisms. One of the active compounds responsible for the immune effects of herbal products is in the form … Continue reading “Latest Research on Glucan : Dec 2021”

Acquired resistance to benomyl and some other systemic fungicides in a strain of Botrytis cinerea in cyclamen A benomyl-resistant strain (R) ofBotrytis cinerea was isolated from cyclamen that had been sprayed with relatively high doses of Benlate two weeks before. In vitro mycelial growth of this strain was less inhibited on PDA containing 1000 μg/ml benomyl (Benlate, 50% W.P.) than that of another, wild isolate ofB. cinerea from cyclamen on PDA with 0.5 μg/ml of the fungicide. The R-strain was … Continue reading “Latest Research on Benomyl : Dec 2021”

Mechanism of met oncogene activation The met oncogene activated in vitro by treatment of a human osteogenic sarcoma (HOS) cell line with N-methyl-N′-nitronitrosoguanidine (MNNG) is related to the tyrosine kinase gene family. Probes from the met oncogene locus recognize two distinct transcripts of 9.0 kb and 10.0 kb which are independently expressed in a cell-type-specific fashion. While the met proto-oncogene locus expresses the 9.0 kb RNA and maps to human chromosome 7q21–31, the locus expressing the 10.0 kb RNA, (tpr; … Continue reading “Latest Research on Oncogene : Dec 2021”

Cyclodextrin-Enhanced Biodegradation of Phenanthrene The effectiveness of in situ bioremediation in many systems may be constrained by low contaminant bioavailability due to limited aqueous solubility or a large magnitude of sorption. The objective of this research was to evaluate the effect of hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HPCD) on phenanthrene solubilization and biodegradation. Results showed that analytical-grade HPCD can significantly increase the apparent solubility of phenanthrene. The increase in apparent solubility had a major impact on the biodegradation rate of phenanthrene. For example, in … Continue reading “Latest Research on Enhanced Biodegradation : Dec 2021”

Physico-Chemical Properties of Cassava Starch Cassava starch was isolated from flour of four IITA (International Institute of Tropical Agriculture, Ibadan, Nigeria) cassava genotypes planted in the dry and in the rainy season and harvested at 6, 9, 12, 15 and 18 months after planting. The amylose contents of the starch samples varied between 17.9 and 23.6%. Within a single genotype and planting season, no systematic changes in particle size distribution as a function of crop age at harvest were found; … Continue reading “Latest Research on Cassava Starch : Dec 2021”

Structure and function of endoglucanase V CELLULOSE is the major polysaccharide component of plant cell walls and is the most abundant organic compound on the planet. A number of bacterial1 and fungal2 organisms can use cellulose as a food source, possessing cellulases (cellobiohydrolases and endoglucanases) that can catalyse the hydrolysis of the β-(1,4) glycosidic bonds. They can be classified into seven distinct families3. The three-dimensional structures of members of two of these families are known4,5. Here we report the structure … Continue reading “Latest Research on Endoglucanase : Dec 2021”

Environmental biotechnology   Environmental biotechnology is emerging as a distinct field that combines the disciplines of related molecular life sciences, ecology, and engineering to exploit biological (principally microbial) processes in environmental, waste treatment, and agricultural applications. This book mandates that the fundamental science and engineering of these disciplines be brought together to identify problems, applications, and opportunities for environmental biotechnology. Environmental Biotechnology clearly represents a step in the right direction with a focus on water and waste water treatment and pollution … Continue reading “Latest Research on environmental biotechnology : Dec 2021”

The molecular ecology of legionellae Legionella pneumophila is the most highly characterized member of the genus of bacteria that survive as intracellular parasites of freshwater protozoa. These bacteria can also multiply intracellularly in human phagocytic cells and cause respiratory disease in humans. Comparison of the invasive strategies of L. penumophila in mammalian and protozoan cells and study of the interactions between Legionella and protozoa should prove useful in development of strategies for the protozoan cells and study of the prevention … Continue reading “Latest Research on molecular ecology : Dec 2021”
